I will remember Pope Benedict XVI for meeting with leaders of various religions in 2011 in Italy, where he was presented with a copy of the Holy Qur’an. The pope was also given a letter from leader of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Mirza Masroor Ahmad, where he said, “From cover to cover, the Holy Qur’an teaches love, affection, peace, reconciliation and the spirit of sacrifice.” The letter furthermore called on the pope to endeavour to work more toward world peace instead of focusing solely on progress.

The pope mentioned, in his address announcing his intention to resign, that this world is increasingly questioning the relevance of faith. The purpose of every religion has been to make the world recognize its Creator and to establish human values. As an Ahmadi Muslim, I can only pray that the next pope works toward this purpose by strengthening interfaith ties so we can be saved from the destruction that we are treading toward. I wish Pope Benedict XVI best of health.
